Clean water sits in a sealed 2.6L (88oz) reservoir, and a built-in pump that only ever touches clean water sends a fresh pour (about 50ml / 1.7oz) to the stainless-steel tray on a schedule you set. Used water then drains away by gravity into a separate tank, carrying fur, saliva and crumbs with it, so it never loops back to your cat.
